Blue Margarita in glass with ice with title

Nothing takes the heat off like a frosty Margarita.

And no margaritas screams SUMMER louder than a Blue Margarita.

It’s full of fresh flavor and a beautiful refreshing blue color!

Easy to make as a single cocktail or a pitcher to share with friends!

    What is a Blue Margarita?

This version of a well loved Margarita cocktail is made with classic ingredients with one exception: Blue Curacao.

The beautiful tropical-ocean colored liqueur gives the Margarita its tell tale color.

This cocktail is also known as an Electric Margarita or Moonlight Margarita.

    What is Blue Curacao?

Blue Curacao (pronounced ‘cure-a-sow’) is a liqueur made in the Caribbean Island of Curacao.

It is made from the dried bitter peel of the laraha fruit; a citrus fruit native to Curacao.

There is a regular version which can be orange or colorless.

The gorgeous blue color is the same liqueur with food coloring added.

If you have ever had a blue cocktail, like a Blue Lagoon, chances are it was made with Blue Curacao.

What Does Blue Curacao Taste Like?

It has a faint orange flavor and is a bit bitter and sweet.

The closest liqueur in flavor would be Triple Sec, making adding it to a Margarita a perfect match!

    Margarita Ingredients

    The ingredients are simple:

    • Blue Curacao
    • Tequila
    • Lime Juice
    • Optional: dash of Sweet & Sour Mix
    • Ice

    Equipment Needed

Cocktail Shaker OR a quart Mason jar with a lid

    Where to Buy Blue Curacao?

It’s easy to find at most liquor stores and online liquor sellers.

    Use Fresh Lime Juice

Freshly squeezed lime juice will make the cocktail results the best.

PRO TIP: Place limes in the microwave for 10 seconds to extract more juice!

How to Make a Blue Margarita – Step-by-Step

STEP 1: Combine the tequila, blue curacao and lime juice in a cocktal shaker with ice. Shake vigorously.

STEP 2: Add a dash of Sweet and Sour mix (if desired); shake again.

STEP 3: Strain into a glass with fresh ice. NOTE: the rim can be salted or not as preferred.

How to Make a Blended Frozen Margarita

If you like an icy version add the cocktail ingredients with 1 cup of ice into a blender.

Blend until the ice has broken down completely.

lime wedges with salt in a scoop

    Make a Pitcher

If you are serving a larger group, you can make a pitcher of Blue Margaritas.

The measurements are in the recipe card at the bottom of the blog post.

PRO TIPS for Making a Pitcher of Margaritas

Combine and chill the ingredients a few hours before serving.

Add a few cups of ice to the serving glasses instead of the pitcher. This to avoids watering down the cocktails as the ice melts.

Consider using freezeable ice cubes. They can be frozen before needed and won’t dilute the cocktail as they thaw.

    Make it a Mocktail!

If you love the idea of this cocktail but want to pass on the alcohol, make it a mocktail!

Use Lemonade instead of the tequila

Use a dash of Blue Curacao Syrup instead of the liqueur

How to Rim a Glass with Salt

If you would like to rim the cocktail glass with salt (or sugar) it’s easy!

    • Wet the rim of the glass with some lime juice.
    • Pour rimming salt or sugar into a small flat plate.
    • Put the glass, rim down, into the salt and twist from side to side to coat.
    • Let the glass sit upgright a few minutes for the salt to set before pouring in the cocktail.

PRO TIP: You can buy rimming salt with a lid formed to pour the salt into it to rim the glass.
