Easy blackberry margaritas are a delicious and easy twist on classic margarita cocktails. When you think of alcoholic drinks a margarita is always at the top of the list. Why not change it up? Using fresh ingredients, ripe blackberries in this case, deliver fresh berry flavor in a really good margarita.

Recipe Ingredient Notes
Fresh blackberries. Choose fully ripe sweet blackberries. You’ll need 1/4 cup or 5 large blackberries.
Fresh lime juice. Squeeze it yourself! It makes all the difference with the margarita’s flavor.
Blanco tequila. Blanco or silver tequila work best for this margarita. The flavor is mild as it has not been aged. Use a good tequila (this will both make the best margaritas but you’ll feel better after drinking it versus a tequila of less quality).
Orange liqueur. Grand Marnier, Cointreau or Citronage (made from the agave plant as tequila is) are recommended. They add orange flavor and will sweeten the margarita. We prefer these over Triple Sec but that can also be used.
Agave nectar. This is used to sweeten the margarita if needed based on how sweet the fresh berries are.
How to make a Blackberry Margarita
STEP 1. Muddle
Add the blackberries and lime juice to a cocktail shaker or quart Mason jar (photo 1). Muddle until the blackberries are liquified (photo 2).
STEP 2. Make the margarita
Add the 2 ounces of tequila, orange liqueur, and a touch of agave (if using) to the cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice cubes (photos 3-6). Shake vigorously until completely chilled– about 30 seconds.
STEP 3. Strain
Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a lowball glass filled with fresh ice (non dry ice version) and garnish with fresh blackberries (photo 7).
Halloween version with dry ice
To make a spooky margarita, carefully add up to a 1” cube of dry ice to the margarita before serving.
Because it will make the cocktail bubble, use a taller glass and do not fill it more than halfway full. Also do not use regular ice in the glass when straining the margarita (the dry ice will chill it).
Allow the margarita to stop smoking before enjoying. Never consume dry ice! See Dry Ice section below.
Variations
Use strawberries or blueberries. Instead of blackberries swap in strawberries or blueberries.
Add a salted rim. If making the version with dry ice we don’t suggest a salted rim. The dry ice causes the margarita to bubble and will interfere with the rim. But if making this for a regular occasion a salted rim can be added. Use kosher salt or margarita coarse salt.
Garnish! Add a lime wheel (slice of lime), or some fresh blackberries.
Don’t have a muddler? A cocktail muddler is a tool specifically for pressing ingredients together to release the oils and liquid. If you don’t have one use a wooden spoon with a long handle.
Using Dry Ice
Please read our Dry Ice Guide before using dry ice. It creates a ghostly fog effect but needs to be handled with care too. Some highlights:
- Always use caution when handling dry ice.
- Never touch dry ice with your bare hands.
- Never ingest dry ice.
- Keep dry ice in a well ventilated container.
- Store away from children and pets.
How to add a salted rim
Use semi-coarse salt or ‘margarita salt‘ which is sold specifically to rim glasses. This works on any type of glass, a traditional margarita glass included.
- Pour some salt onto a small plate or bowl, deep enough to coat the rim of your glass.
- Run a lime wedge around the rim to wet it.
- Turn the glass upside down, place the rim of the glass into the salt and gently twist the glass to coat with salt.
- Remove the glass and set upright to allow the rim to dry before adding the margarita to the salt-rimmed glass.
