Recipe Ingredients Notes
Box of white cake mix or vanilla cake mix. Choose your favorite brand, regular or gluten-free, along with ingredients specified on the box for preparation.
Gluten-free white cake mix can be difficult to find. We used a gluten-free white cake mix, I found Bob’s Red Mill YELLOW cake mix has instructions for making a white cake that works great.
Unsalted butter. Start with room temperature butter.
Confectioners’ sugar. Also called powdered sugar. This is a classic ingredient in buttercream frosting.
Heavy whipping cream. Just a little is used to adjust the thickness of the frosting. Whole milk could also be used.
Vanilla extract. Flavors the frosting.
Red and blue gel food coloring. These create two of the colors of the frosting. The natural color of the frosting makes the white color.
Sprinkles. These are optional decorations.
Supplies needed:
- Cupcake liners
- Piping bag with a star tip (or a gallon plastic zipper bag can be substituted for the piping bag)
- Wilton 1M tip.

Add in the white buttercream into the prepared piping bag.
Pipe a generous amount of frosting on each cupcake in a spiral. Top with red, white or blue sprinkles, white star sprinkles or other decorations to create festive cupcakes (if desired).

Variations
Make different flavors. Extracts can be added to the cake mix to make different flavors of cake.
Make funfetti cupcakes. Use a box mix or our homemade funfetti cake with red and blue sprinkles.
Red velvet cake mix. For patriotic red cupcakes, red velvet cake mix can be used for red velvet cupcakes.
Add a sparkler on top. This should only be done where sparklers are legal and for presentation as monitored by an adult. Extinguish the sparklers before serving the colorful cupcakes.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Allow to warm slightly before serving.
