When the idea of Milkshake Week popped up, I found myself with more ideas for milkshakes than I’d ever considered. When my kids got wind of the project, that list quadrupled quickly. Everyone loves a milkshake, am I right?

My first contribution to the week was a Cherry-Cola Milkshake;  featuring my not-so-secret-anymore indulgence of Cherry Coke in the form of a shake-meets-float idea that was slurped down by my taste testers faster than I could time. The second idea that popped to mind was a suggestion from my kids, haling to a family favorite dessert:  Grasshopper Pie.

I personally have loved Grasshopper Pie for as long as I can remember. My mother did not serve it often but it seemed so exotic in the minty-green hue bursting with chocolate mint flavors. Each my mother and Grandmother had a recipe card with the beloved recipe and since I shared it on Boulder Locavore it has remained a reader favorite.

    Chocolate-Mint Ice cream

I thought it was a genius idea to make it into a milkshake, with a version for each adults and kids. My first true encounter with adult milkshakes was when visiting the iconic Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs last year. They had just opened their swank new bowling alley featuring a hip menu of small bites and adult milkshakes. I fell in love with one of their recommended favorites, the Purple Pin, which uses Crème de Violette affording a tender violet color and light flavor of violets too.

True Grasshopper Pie is made with a marshmallow base, melted with cream and Crème de Menthe. For the purposes of the milkshake using Chocolate-Mint Ice Cream works best along with Crème de Menthe and some chocolate cookies both in the milkshake and rimming the glass. Drinking the shake over the chocolate cookie rim truly brings forth the taste of the pie and is a fantastic addition to the creamy, chocolate and mint flavors.

Broken Chocolate Cookies with a vintage meat mallet

True Grasshopper Pie is green thanks to the Crème de Menthe. For the milkshake I wanted it to be green but unsure the amount of Crème de Menthe would deliver that I selected green Chocolate Mint Ice cream. If you desire the subtle green color I suggest doing the same. Many Chocolate Mint ice creams are actually white in color so check before leaving the store.

    Grasshopper Pie Milkshake

There is nothing better than a frozen, retro Grasshopper Pie. Unless you make it into an adult milkshake! Chocolate Mint ice cream, Creme de Menthe liqueur and some chocolate cookie crumbs do the trick. Made perfect with a cookie crumb rimmed glass to drink from! Grasshopper Pie and this milkshake contain Creme de Menthe, a minty liqueur. If desiring an alcohol-free option, swap the liqueur for milk. The shake will still be minty from the ice cream.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cups Chocolate Mint Ice Cream (green in color)
    • 1 ounce Crème de Menthe , purchased or homemade
    • 1 tablespoon plus 1/4-1/2 cup ground Chocolate cookie/wafer crumbs (I used Pamela’s Gluten-Free Extreme Chocolate Mini Cookies)

    Instructions

Rimming the Milkshake Glass with Cookie Crumbs:

    • Reserving the 1 tablespoon cookie crumbs, place remaining cook crumbs in a small plate. Smooth out to make an even top surface.
    • Take the milkshake serving glass and place the rim on top of the chocolate mint ice cream, adding slight pressure twist the glass in the ice cream to create a ring approximately 1/4 inch deep.
    • Place the rimmed glass rim-side down into the cookie crumbs so the crumbs are covering the ice cream ring on the glass. Gently twist the glass from side to side allowing the crumbs to fully cover the ice cream ring. Lift from crumbs and set aside to dry.

    Making the Milkshake:

    • Combine the ice cream, Creme de Menthe and 1 tablespoon cookie crumbs in a blender and blend until smooth. NOTE: Milk may be substituted for the Creme de Menthe if a non-alcohol version is desired.

I agree Rebecca. Without the mint chocolate is too much for me in the heat. With it? No stopping me.

Thanks Beth. Admittedly they are delicious. I was careful not to sample any until after the photos to make sure there would be one to take a photo of!
