Looking for a fun summer sipper with more pizzazz than water or soda? I’ve got the perfect recipe for you: the Almond Joy Sipper!
This post is shared as part of Boulder Locavore’s ongoing partnership with Silk, exploring healthy lifestyles choices and exciting plant-based dietary options. All opinions are my own.
Do you ever feel like you simply can’t get enough to drink during the day? I’m not talking about being a barfly but regular people trying to stay hydrated during these long hot days of summer. I leave semi-consumed water glasses in my daily household wake, telling the tale of a girl who won’t down a full glass to save her life.
I’ve been trying flavored seltzer water on ice (and learning I’m particular about how natural the flavor is, or not in many cases). And despite drinking something (or nursing it as the case may be) all day long, I’m still thirsty.
I was actually pondering this dilemma last week as my husband asked, looking at my desk with 4 glasses of water with ice, ‘when did you go from being a ‘no ice in my water’ drinker to an ice-in-my-water drinker?’ My answer? Since I’ve become thirsty all the time. It then struck me, part of the issue is that I was not drinking something that tasted like something I’d WANT to drink.
One thing I love about plant-based milks is that they taste light and clean to me. I feel like I do when I’ve had water to drink but of course they taste great (versus tasting like nothing with water). I especially like Silk’s Almond and Coconut Milks and will often put them in things like cereal, or chia bowls, but for some reason I don’t think to drink a glass of milk.
I opened the refrigerator earlier this week searching for something sweet to eat. Inspired by the iconic candy bar, this sumptuous combination of dark chocolate, coconut and almond dairy-free plant milk are as refreshing as they are irresistible.
And who doesn’t love a bit of chocolate syrup and coconut fringe?!
With a bit of tinkering and a bit of glass embellishment I landed on a combination of the two that really reminded me of a lightened up candy bar in drink form; the Almond Joy Sipper was born (and quickly consumed)!
The recipe reflects the proportions that tasted best to me but by all means experiment with the combination to meet your palate! It’s a tough job but someone has to do it; I know you can!
Recipe
Almond Joy Sipper (dairy-free)
Ingredients
- 3 ounces Chocolate Milk dairy or nut milk
- 7 ounces Silk AlmondCoconut Milk Blend (Original)
- Chocolate syrup (optional)
- Unsweetened Shredded Coconut (optional)
Instructions
- (Optional) To rim the glass: Pour some chocolate syrup into a small flat bottomed bowl (at least ½ inch deep). Pour coconut shreds into a second small bowl (enough to be ¾ inches deep). Place a 14 ounce tall glass, rim first, into the chocolate syrup. Twist to fully coat evenly. Lift and allow excess chocolate to drain back into the bowl.
- Place into the coconut, rim first, and rock the glass (or use finger on the outside of the rim) to allow chocolate to become covered with the coconut.
- Fill a glass ¾ full with ice. Fill ¼-1/3 full with Dark Chocolate+Walnut Nutchello. Fill the rest with Almond Coconut Blend.

My girls hate Almond Joy, which delights to me no end because they pass me their snack sized Almond Joys from their Halloween bags each year. Woot! Almond Joy is one of my favorite candy bars so I can’t wait to try this yummy beverage!

This sounds so good. My brother likes Silk, so I know he will be happy to try the recipe. Cool beverages in the hot summer are a treat.

It’s weird how we are about water. You think it tastes like nothing; I enjoy drinking water more than anything else, perhaps in part because there’s nothing about it to get tired of. I also find it to be the most thirst-quenching beverage. Your almond joy sipper sounds delicious, so I might try it for a change, when I want something a bit more substantial than water (like when my husband has iced coffee).

I recently found a coupon for Nutchello and have been anxious to give it a try. Since developing issues with dairy over the last few years, I have really come to miss chocolate milk.

I really love Nutchello Marcie. The chocolate flavor is rich and chocolately without being over filling. I find I feel funky if I drink much chocolate dairy milk but don’t have the same physical feeling with Nutchello.

Oh my goodness how delicious does that sound! Now if I could just tuck in right now it would be perfect 😉 x

I have been looking for yummy dairy free treats for my daughter. She has been lactose intolerant for a while but has gotten much more sensitive. This looks like something she would love, thank you for sharing!
Toni Dash says
Absolutely this would fill the bill. I’m thinking this is your daughter who is gluten-intolerant too, Pam, is that right? There is a relationship between gluten intolerance and dairy intolerance for many people relating to the dairy enzyme being produced on the end of the villi, which are compromised if someone is intolerant to gluten. Often once gluten is removed from the diet that enzyme production for dairy may return. It happened for my daughter so is also gluten-intolerant. It may be a temporary situation for her but either way Silk has some great products.
