While on my recent excursion to Hygiene Colorado I had fully imagined dining at the Crane Hollow Café, whisking through the art gallery next door (which incidentally features many good local artists and jewelers) and popping briskly into Mary’s Market & Deli, the other main business for pedestrians in town. I expected Mary’s would be a quick look around, warranting a brief mention at the bottom of my Crane Hollow Café post and that would be it. I suppose the prompting by two friends (one whom I have not seen or spoken to for probably 5 years who went out of her way to tell a mutual friend I’d love Mary’s) should have been a clue.
When starting toward the door of Mary’s, my companion pointed at a small sign ‘All Gluten Free Bakery’, and winked. That’s great, I thought, feeling anyone can bake a few batches of cookies or a muffin and call themselves a gluten free bakery. When I swung the door open I do believe I inadvertently gasped and heard myself saying ‘This is SO unexpected!’ We were met by part old time General Store, part Flea Market/Antique Store, part Gourmet Market and full service Grocery. This place has the vibe I crave; authentic, lived in, hip, shabby chic and down to earth. I was ready to move in.
I have not had a pot pie since becoming gluten free and as I look back I do not believe I have ever had one freshly made. I am so glad I brought one home because all the wonderful things I felt about Mary’s have multiplied by 200 percent in tasting this dish. Mary did mention that she has a good pie crust recipe; that is an extreme understatement. Mary has the best pie crust recipe I truly have ever tasted, gluten or gluten free.
As I devoured my piece of pie I was calculating when I could drive back out to stock up for my freezer. Forget the gluten-free part; this is the best thing you will have eaten in a long time, gluten or not.

I love Mary's! It's been too long since I've been there. Thanks for reminding me, Grace!
I had never visited and was so glad I did! I sense it has evolved since Mary took it over and it feels alive with lots more to come!
Mary's looks like such a fun and delicious place to visit. Those pies are making me hungry!I'd love to see the recipe for the Buffalo Pot Pie. The crust is so flaky and perfect:)
Honestly Lora? Loved the idea of the pie but Pot Pie has never been on my comfort food list. The pie crust was perfect you are right. With a touch of sweetness and isn't it beautiful to look at? The pie is full of flavorful pieces of buffalo meat and lots of vegetables perfectly cooked, still with great structure. The sauce is like a modern remake of the old school flavors. I somehow feel after meeting Mary, even if we were to make it ourselves it would not be quite the same. Mary has something special that she adds of herself to all her food!
Buffalo pot pie looks really good. I have never had gluten free for pasta/pie. Anyhow, My favorite is chicken pot pie from Marie Callender…Glorious!
I have heard Marie Calendar pot pies are fantastic! Since gluten is a binder, the absence of it requires multiple flours (which can affect the taste) and if not down well really affects the texture of baked goods. This pie is great as I said on its own. Certainly after experiencing not so great gluten free baked goods, how great it is becomes even more clear!
OH MAN! This looks great – fingers crossed that some of her goodies are dairy free as well! Wish I was going to be in town – I would love to stop by to sample her treats – but I'll be on vaca.
Thanks for sharing this
Katie I sent you a DM on Twitter too but YES Mary considers her food gluten free and 'dairy conscious'. She spoke quite a bit about different dairy substitutes they are doing; versions of her quiche that does not have dairy for instance. It's worth a trip to check it all out and to speak to her. I know she's very sensitive to feeding people and amending her food to make it available to those who want it! Meeting her will brighten your day; promise!
I want to go there! That pie, amazing.
I is amazing; seriously! Hope you will be able to visit. I feel you won't be sorry!
What a charming place! The pie looks fantastic
'Charming' is the perfect word for it!
Why do I not have places like this near where I live? Being a horse person I was immediately drawn to the saddle. But then I saw pie and was distracted immediately. There is nothing quite like a good pot pie. Great photos.
I did not know you are a horse person Kim! This is nestled in the midst of ranch land. Lots of horses and bison in the area. The pie was truly divine. Thanks you for the nod on the photos!
Oh, her salsa is to die for! Worth the trip out just for that!
Oh Valerie! I did not try that…..yet! Appreciate the endorsement.
wow that looks fascinating place to visit, love the furniture lay out, and the pies looks perfect, the fruit pie make me drooling, and my stomach suddenly rumbling!
cheers
I really could not take photos to do the place justice Tya. It is a huge store, all wood. The community table is a wonderful old wood dining table that could seat about 10 I think. Some of the vintage items in the photos are on the table. It sits directly in front of a huge window so it is bathed in natural light. The whole place feels so rural and current at the same time. Isn't this the perfect setting to have a nice piece of pie too?!
This place looks amazing. It seems there's nothing you can't get! The pot pie looks extremely good.
No sloes my friend but otherwise we are pretty well stocked here!
can she open a store in seattle please?!
I'm sure she'd fit right in and that Seattle would adopt her immediately!
Love the looks of those apple pies and I think we once played with that paint-chipped toy tractor!
Mmmm, what a perfect pie! I'd love some of that – it seems I really need to visit Hygiene!
It's so great that more and more GF places are springing up, offering really good GF treats. I love the sound of the pie!
I love Mary’s market. All of their items are gluten free and many of their baked goods are dairy free too. Just ask to make sure on the dairy free (can’t remember then off the top of my head). They are really open about their recipes.
Mary, what a wonderful pleasure to meet you … wow what a monumental meeting and soul connection….. I am soo excitied about seeing you on Friday at 1 pm. My prayers have been answered thank you
peace lou
