    Recipe Ingredients Notes

Unsalted butter. Be sure to start with softened butter for best results.

Flour. Regular all-purpose flour or gluten-free measure-for-measure flour blend can be used. We recommend Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free 1-to-1 baking flour for gluten-free baking. It’s the only flour we use.

Nutella. If you haven’t tried Nutella it’s a chocolate-hazelnut spread (that’s delicious). You’ll find a jar of Nutella with the baking ingredients or peanut butter. It provides the chocolate flavor in this favorite brownie recipe; no cocoa powder required.

Nutella is a brand name and is easy to find in most grocery stores. Any brand of chocolate hazelnut spread can be used.

Chocolate hazelnut candies. For topping we use chocolate hazelnut candies. Ferrero Rocher or Baci Perugina brands are great options.

How to make Nutella Brownies – Step-by-Step

    STEP 1. Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8-inch by 8-inch square baking pan with a nonstick cooking spray or line the pan with foil, leaving an overhang on the sides, and spray the foil with a non-stick spray(photo 1).

    STEP 2. Make batter

    nutella brownies recipes steps 1-4

In a large bowl, using an electric stand mixer (fitted with the paddle attachment) or handheld mixer, beat the butter until smooth and creamy (photo 2). Add the brown sugar; mix until combined (photo 3). Add in the eggs; mix until combined (photo 4). Set aside.

    nutella brownies recipes steps 5-8

In separate mixing bowl, whisk together the salt and flour (photo 5). Pour the dry ingredients mixture into the butter mixture, spoon in the Nutella, and mix everything until well combined (photo 6-7). Set aside.

    STEP 3. Add to pan

Chop the chocolate hazelnut candies into quarters (photos 8-9). The cream inside will make them delicate, take care not to smash them. Set aside.

Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread to the edges (photo 10). Pour the ¼ cup Nutella topping in lines across the brownie batter (photo 11). Using a skewer, toothpick, or knife, create swirls of Nutella by dragging through the Nutella (photo 12).

Top the brownies with the candies and lightly push them into the batter so they stick (photo 13).

    STEP 4. Bake & Cool

Bake the brownies for 30-35 minutes, until the edges start to brown and a toothpick or cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean (photo 14). Cool completely on wire rack before removing from pan, allowing the candies to reharden.

    Variations

Skip the topping. If you don’t have the hazelnut candies or don’t want to use them, the nutella brownies are equally delicious without them or you can even top with some chocolate chips instead.

Mix-In idea. If you want a little extra, chop up some hazelnuts and fold them into the batter before pouring it into the pan.

Serving idea. Nutella brownies are delicious with ice cream and perfect for making a sundae with. Top a Nutella brownie with a little bit of caramel sauce and side it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Peanut butter is delicious with Nutella! Swap the ¼ cup Nutella topping for peanut butter. This would work best if the peanut butter is warmed up in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. The warming will make the peanut butter a little creamier and easier to swirl. Spoon the peanut butter over the brownie batter in lines and swirl it around with a knife.

    How to Store

Store covered in an airtight container at room temperature or they can be refrigerated. These will remain good for several days, even up to a week.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can I freeze Nutella brownies?

Yes! Allow the brownies to cool completely, cut and either wrap brownies individually in parchment paper or plastic wrap. Place in a freezer bag or container. This allows them to be taken out one at a time. Store for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator.
