Ingredients

  • 5 large blackberries a scant ¼ cup; fully ripe
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 ounces blanco or silver tequila
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur Grand Marnier, Cointreau, Citronage
  • ½ ounce agave nectar if needed (to taste – depending on the sweetness of your blackberries)

Instructions

  • Add the blackberries and lime juice to a cocktail shaker and muddle until the blackberries are liquified and have totally released their juices.
  • Add the tequila, orange liqueur, and agave (if needed). Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously until completely chilled– about 30 seconds.
  • Strain with a fine-mesh strainer into a lowball glass filled with ice (unless using the dry ice option; then no regular ice in the glass) and garnish with fresh blackberries.
  • HALLOWEEN VERSION: To make a spooky margarita, carefully add up to a 1” cube of dry ice to the margarita before serving.
Allow the margarita to stop smoking before enjoying. Never consume dry ice! See Notes.

Notes

Please read our Dry Ice Guide before using dry ice. It creates a ghostly fog effect but needs to be handled with care too. Some highlights:
  •  Always use caution when handling dry ice.
  •  Never touch dry ice with your bare hands.
  • Never ingest dry ice.
  • Keep dry ice in a well ventilated container.
  • Store away from children and pets.
How to add a salted rim (optional)
Use semi-coarse salt or 'margarita salt' which is sold specifically to rim glasses. This works on any type of glass, a traditional margarita glass included.
  1. Pour some salt onto a small plate or bowl, deep enough to coat the rim of your glass.
  2. Run a lime wedge around the rim to wet it.
  3. Turn the glass upside down, place the rim of the glass into the salt and gently twist the glass to coat with salt.
  4. Remove the glass and set upright to allow the rim to dry before adding the margarita to the salt-rimmed glass.
