Summertime has finally arrived! As we watch the school year disappear in our rear view mirrors, fun in the sun, great outings and lollygagging quickly take its place as a way to spend long sunny days. In my family I find that dictates the necessity of me carting around loads of snack options.
Anyone with kids knows hunger can strike at the most unexpected opportunity. Maybe we are halfway around the zoo trail when the kids’ stomachs begin growling like the lions. Or we might be up a mountain trail too far from the parking lot to turn back for sustenance. I’m suggesting these peckish perils are only about children, but of course adults are no different we can usually hang on a little longer! This entire scenario is complicated for many, my family included, by being gluten-free. Snack planning is crucial especially when out and about as one never knows if a gluten-free option will be available.
We have been gluten-free for almost a decade now for medical necessity. At first it felt like someone came in and took all our toys away! Tried and true food favorites were no longer an option and though I could buck up, my kids were 2 and 6 years old at the time. Taking away their favorite food was confusing and sad frankly.
One of those foods they could no longer have was Goldfish®. There really is no replacement for them between the charm of the tiny cheesy fish and being ‘the snack that smiles back’®. I had my own memories from my childhood of them as well. They were portable, with a great crunch and flavor.
I really can’t adequately relate what it’s like to learn something you felt you’d never be able to eat again surprisingly jumps back onto the menu! Though it’s been almost 10 years and my kids are now 12 and 16, when they learned Goldfish is now available in gluten-free Goldfish Puffs they were ecstatic. There is a sense of normalcy returned when the feeling of gluten dividing people into the ‘have’ and ‘have not’s is lifted by having a gluten-free option everyone (gluten-eaters included) will love.
In May two new flavors of Goldfish Puffs were released, Twisted Grilled Cheese and Sizzlin’ Hot Wings. We’ve tried both and they both get a big thumbs up! This Sunday, June 14, a coupon will be available in the Sunday newspaper (the Denver Post for Colorado locals) or from participating store websites (King Soopers in Colorado) so you can give the new flavors a try.
I’ve also whipped a simple Summertime Gluten-Free Party Mix to celebrate!

This looks fantastic Toni. We’re not gluten-free but I have a feeling my family would gobble this up and fight over the last little bit.

I cannot begin to tell you how glad I am to have found your blog!
yahoo Goldfish!
I have probably had celiac disease all my life but was only diagnosed and jumped on to the gluten free train 15 years ago. At that time my aunt’s advice was “toast Everything always” and ” eat before you go out to dinner”. For years I have eaten “vicariously” gluten laden items and very occassionaly the odd truly GF dish away from my kitchen ….but now there are accessible GF choices of some of my favorite things.

Barb it’s comments like yours that make what I do so worthwhile! I completely understand and my kids (also GF) felt the same. Who would have thought one little fish shaped cracker could make all the difference; but it does!

I love Chex mix and love these new Goldfish flavors. I remember King Soopers! I actually used to work in an Albertson’s a long, long, long time ago 🙂 I think I would have to throw in some chocolate chips because salty and sweet are good too 🙂 Thanks Toni! Now I want to go hiking so I can take this with me!
